Literary News from Ukraine: a Cultural Crossroads Event
A intercultural meeting about nowadays literary and publishing scene in Ukraine and its relations with Flemish literarature, organised in cooperation with the association “Promote Ukraine” who will open up a “hidden box” of literature in Ukrainian language in Brussels.
Natalia Karpenko will present her translations of some of the most interesting Flemish and Dutch books, from the classic ‘The Sorrow of Belgium’ by Hugo Claus to a touching children’s picture book ‘One Million Butterflies’ by Edwards van de Vendel, from the deep psychological prose of a Holocaust victim Etty Hillesum to the hilarious novel ‘The Misfortunates’ by one of the best living Flemish writers Dimitri Verhulst.
“The hidden box” will then open wider: four top Ukrainian publishing houses – Tempora, Dukh i litera, Calvaria and Nebo BookLab – will present some of their best and newest titles ranging from artful children’s books to poetry and high-level journalism. And that all will happen in live interaction with the audience. Ukrainian readers living in Belgium and the Netherlands are invited to join the presentation, along with representatives of the Flemish Literary Fund, the Flemish Government, Belgian diplomats serving in Kyiv, Ukrainian diplomats serving in Brussels, the Flemish and Dutch writers.
